Split system heat pump units are a great alternative to central AC and Heating. These units are easy to install, relatively cheap to purchase and operate and they provide a lot of options for getting your interior climate just the way you want it.
First, a little bit about what it means to be a "ductless split system heat pump". A split system heat pump consists of an interior wall or ceiling mount head unit, an exterior compressor/condenser and a line set that connects the two. A heat pump in AC mode takes in warm room air, cools it using refrigerant and delivers it back into the room. In HEAT mode it does just the opposite, taking in cool air and warming it using electricity then delivers it back into the room. No natural gas or propane is need when using a heat pump.
There are many benefits when installing a split system unit. First of all there are a wide variety of units available in many different sizes and efficiency ratings. The unit pictured is a 12,000 BTU 20 SEER unit. Second you can choose how much or how little of your interior space you wish to
heat or cool. for instance you could

install a split system unit in your bedroom and turn your central AC off at night so you don't have to cool the entire house. Finally the ease of installation makes these units ideal for remodeling. Simply cut a small hole through the wall where you want your unit and the line set passes cleanly through the wall. You can cover the line set at the exterior with a PVC chase as shown in the photo to the right. Best if all there are no ducts to run because the unit is ductless.
The unit pictured is a ComfortStar Split system Model No. CHP012CA-2BO.
Platinum Construction DBR ordered it from ACwholesalers.com to supply heat and air conditioning to a garage conversion project in Murrieta, CA. The garage was converted to a home office for a work at home professional. The unit came fully charged with freon and cost approximately $1,200.00 including all the installation materials. The subcontract price to have it professionally installed was $500.00 and it was completed in just two hours.
If you are remodeling or just want to save money on your current AC and heat bills, I would recommend looking into ductless split system heat pump units. As a construction professional, I would recommend them for almost any remodeling project.
